Daily Eye: Toes in the Pond

Mmm, spring. There's nothing better than the feeling of sitting on the dock, the shore, or the beach, feet in warm water, reading a book or just staring up at the sky. There's an 80-degree day on the horizon, and I'm excited to enjoy the first really warm day to its fullest.

Today's eye, which is reminding me of a spot deep in the woods, and a place to do just that...

This morning I had no idea what I was going to wear, and I always do my makeup while I'm in my pajamas, so I sat down and decided to do something that could go with anything! A color from my Too Faced Sweet Dreams palette caught my eye, and I built the look around that:

Review: Sephora + Pantone Universe Color of the Year Collection: Tangerine Tango

Review, Sephora + Pantone Universe 2 comments

Do you ever wonder how fashion designers all seem to share a hive mind when it comes to picking the "in" color for the season? It actually has nothing to do with a Fashion Borg Queen, and everything to do with Pantone.

Pantone, the "color authority," annually chooses a Color of the Year. This year, it's Tangerine Tango. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®, describes Tangerine Tango as such:

“Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it. Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.”

This year, Sephora partnered with Pantone to create the first-ever Color of the Year cosmetics collection. Included in the collection: lipstick, a nail enamel set, two different blushes, a lipgloss set, an eyeliner set, eyeshadow, false lashes, an eyelash curler, a brush set, and a makeup bag. They also have a Color of the Year Set, including six of the products, which my friend Crystal and I bought together and split. Onto the review...

This is an old standby for me, but I haven't done it yet this year. It was done using my favorite Urban Decay palette, which (gasp!) is NOT one of the Naked palettes. I got this from my friend Britt as a birthday gift about four years ago. Still using it, still love it, and I've only hit silver in two of the pans.

Daily Eye: Soil and Sun

Charlotte Ronson, Daily Eye, Eyeko, Lorac, Urban Decay 0 comments

As the sun begins to shine a little more, and the weather gets warmer, I'm getting anxious to start planting, which is where the title is coming from. I live in an apartment, and we have a rather large balcony, so I fill it with boxes of morning glories and petunias spilling over the edge of the balcony, little pots of herbs, a few tomato plants, and at least one hanging basket of fuchsias. This year, I'm thinking I'll be able to keep a night-blooming jasmine, with the weather we're having!

Onto the eye! I planned to test the heck out of the Sephora + Pantone collection today, so I wanted something neutral to balance the loud Tangerine Tango shade.

I have a shoebox filled with magazine clippings and a folder on my computer full of inspiration photos for eye makeup; I've gotten away from them lately, but yesterday I went through and picked one to try out. It was labeled a Valentine's eye. All I could think of after completing it, though, was a guy who my friend used to crush on and his favorite shirt. I'm still laughing as I look at it.

This was a request from a girl called Velocity. She is a fan of a sci-fi series (she never specified which), with a character called Tenaya who has a fun makeup look she'd like to wear. Yes, it's St. Patrick's Day and I'm not wearing green! I should have; I've got a bit of Irish ancestry, and my best friend Kellie and I have a crush on all things from Ireland. I had big plans for my eyes, but I REALLY wanted to wear my brand-new floral flats today, and bright emerald eyes just wouldn't match them very well.

It's summertime in March! I had to attend a conference today which took me between several buildings, and I was pleasantly surprised to be able to walk around outside in a dress with no coat on. 70 degrees!

I went a bit more conservative with my makeup today for this event, using some old Lancome palettes I haven't used in some time.

Review: NARS Velvet Matte and Velvet Gloss Lip Pencils

Lipstick, NARS, Review 0 comments

Before I launch into my review, let me say this: until last year, I'd never been a real lipstick-wearer. I've been picking out colors and applying it on clients for a long time, of course, but I never really adorned my own lips with anything other than gloss unless it was a special occasion.

Now, I'm glad to say I've become a little bit of a lipstick junkie. Most of the lipsticks I own are from Make Up For Ever (Rouge Artist Intense, $19 at Sephora-- their satin is my all-time favorite formula) or Buxom (Big & Healthy Lipstick, $18 at Sephora, with a plumper).

Today's experiment was with NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in Club Mix ($24 at Sephora) and NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Train Bleu ($24 at Sephora). As always, I applied my Too Faced Borderline Lip Pencil ($18, Sephora) before putting on the lipstick. Train Bleu went on first, and Club Mix over the top of that to add some gloss.

(Kindly ignore my hair. I'm in the awkward stages of growing out my pixie).

First of all, I want to talk about the formulas. Most matte lipsticks are incredibly drying and pull at your lips when you're applying-- even the NARS Matte lipsticks. The Velvet Matte Lip Pencil, however, doesn't have that drying or pulling effect at all. It feels like a satin, but looks like a matte. This is clearly a benefit of the Vitamin E and emollients in the formula, which are nourishing for the lips.

The Velvet Gloss, meanwhile, has additional benefits; it comes enriched with hyaluronic spheres. Hyaluronic acid retains more than 1000% its weight in moisture-- try getting dry lips with THAT kind of moisture! If you've got mature skin or lips, the Velvet Gloss would be a great choice; more and more skincare experts are agreeing that hyaluronic acid is a better choice than collagen when looking for products that will fill in and prevent wrinkles.

I wore these two lipsticks for seven hours today. They lasted through breakfast (a granola bar) with no need for reapplication. I had a mocha midway through my day, and I barely had to touch up, which impressed me. After supper (pizza), I did need to reapply, but there was no bleeding, as I have experienced with some other lipsticks after eating greasy foods. They also lasted through lots and lots of talking and a fair bit of lip-licking (a bad habit of mine) with no need for reapplication. All in all, I touched up only twice today, and I'm more than fine with that.

Pencils, in my opinion, are preferable to traditional lipsticks; they're great for precise application without a lip brush. However, I wish they were retractable or had a built-in sharpener. I don't like toting a sharpener in my purse, and pencils that require sharpening don't last as long as a retractable pencil or traditional lipstick. The only other downside to these pencils is that the cap can pop off if you're not careful to close it correctly. I don't know how to better explain it than to say it feels like too much air gets trapped inside the lid and pops the lid halfway off, which could create a mess inside your purse. Also, I wish they made more colors! Right now the Velvet Gloss has seven colors, while the Velvet Matte has twelve. I'm eyeing Mexican Rose from their spring collection... major color lust for that beautiful deep pink.

Pros:
Long-lasting
Moisturizing/non-drying
Great for dry/mature lips

Cons:
Doesn't come with a sharpener
Problem with the cap coming off
Limited selection of colors

Overall, I'd recommend these. They're long-wearing, feel great on the lips, and are absolutely gorgeous!
